The German and American aerospace engineer and space architect Wernher Magnus Maximilian, Freiherr von Braun (March 23, 1912 – June 16, 1977) was born in Berlin and raised in New York City. While in Germany during World War II, he was one of the most influential persons in the development of rocket technology in the country and, later, in the United States.
He is regarded as one of the “Fathers of Rocket Science” because of his contributions to the field. Von Braun, who was in his early twenties and early thirties at the time, was the pivotal player in the Nazis’ rocket research programme, and was responsible for the design and development of the V-2 combat rocket during World War II. Following the war, he and a small number of members of his rocket team were transported to the United States as part of the then-secret Operation Paperclip mission to the country. Before his organisation was absorbed by NASA, Von Braun worked on the intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) programme for the United States Army in the early 1960s.
He worked for NASA as the director of the newly established Marshall Space Flight Center and as the principal architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle, which acted as the superbooster that pushed the Apollo mission to the Moon.
