A Sinéad O'Connor documentary is coming to Sky and NOW TV this month.
Sinéad O'Connor's unexpected death at the age of 56 shook music fans everywhere. Famed for her cover of Prince's “Nothing Compares 2 U” and songs like “Mandika” and “Lay Your Head Down", O'Connor was one of Ireland's best-known singers in the ‘80s, ’90s and 2000s. In addition to her music, O'Connor also became known as an activist who fought for women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights and racial equality throughout her life.
Last year, Showtime released a Sinéad O'Connor documentary, Nothing Compares, about O'Connor's fascinating life and career. “Devastated. We were so lucky to have her,” the documentary's director, Kathryn Ferguson, wrote in a tweet after O'Connor's death.
After the singer's death Sky announced that it would be re-airing the documentary. Here's more information about Ferguson's documentary and how you can watch it.
What is the Nothing Compares documentary about?
Comprised of interviews with O’Connor, archival footage of her concert performances and more personal footage from O'Connor's life, Nothing Compares charts the remarkable life and career of the Irish singer from her childhood in Dublin to her stratospheric rise within the music industry to her bold activism later in life.
As director Kathryn Ferguson told The Guardian, she sought to highlight just how brave O'Connor was in her activism. “It wasn’t cool, on-trend activism,” Ferguson said. “A lot of it was very unpalatable. The sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic church? Jeez Louise, it’s not something people wanted, or were ready, to hear.”
Ultimately, Nothing Compares is what Ferguson calls a “love letter.” “It was made over many, many years,” she said on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row. "And made because of the impact she had made on me as a young girl growing up in Ireland.”
Is there a trailer for Nothing Compares?
There is — and it's enough to make us all want to tune in.
Based on what we've seen so far, the documentary promises to be moving, uplifting and empowering.
When will Nothing Compares air?
The documentary airs on Sky at 2:00 a.m. July 29, 2023 and will be available to stream on NOW TV from the same date.
