SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — On Tuesday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made clarifications to its Word of Wisdom, a health code for members. Two days later a Redditor made a list of "Hot Drink Alternatives" for church members wanting a hot drink while obeying the Word of Wisdom.
An article in the church-owned "New Era" Tuesday made clarifications for teens and youth who may be confused about the rule saying that green tea, vaping, mochas, lattes, and cappuccinos are against the Word of Wisdom.
However, medical marijuana is allowed, but only for those with a prescription for a doctor in a place where it's legal.
The Word of Wisdom encourages healthy eating while barring members from consuming the following:
- Alcohol
- Tobacco
- Coffee
- Tea
- Illegal drugs and other harmful substances
Members must obey the Word of Wisdom, to go to the temple, where private, sacred ceremonies are performed. Members believe the Word of Wisdom was an 1833 revelation from God to church-founder Joseph Smith.
After news broke of those clarifications, Redditor JohnH2posted a list of hot drinks that members can still consume while obeying the Word of Wisdom.
Only wanting to be known by his Reddit handle, JohnH2 gave 2News permission to repost his list below.
It's important to note that this list is not official doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and that the church has not approved, endorsed, or clarified its stance any of the items on the list.
JohnH2 began by saying:
There appears to be interest in knowing what alternatives there are to tea/coffee with/without caffeine... I will detail some of what I know.
WITH CAFFEINE:
Brewed Cacao - for example, CrioBru. This is actually my favorite stuff, very dark and chocolatey and should not be confused with hot chocolate. Add sugar, milk, other flavorings as desired.
Where to find: Some health food or specialty food stores carry it, online is usually the best bet.
Yerba Mate - Ilex paraguariensis. for example, Gauyaki Yerba Mate. Grassy somewhat bitter taste (depending on preparation), considered an acquired taste if not pre-prepared. Traditionally drunk from a gourd prepared via either nearly boiling water or very cold water. Adding sugar and orange peels or other things can make it more palatable to those not accustomed to it.
Where to find: Gauyaki and competitors have prepackaged drinks usually with sugar available in many locations now, alternatively one can find Yerba Mate in either loose-leaf or tea bags sometimes in supermarkets (Kroger/Smiths in Utah) often carries it), but more commonly in Spanish (particularly Argentinian or Brazil) markets.
Youpon- Ilex vomitoria. No common examples, I have only ever ordered this online (e.g. Amazon) (though if one lives in the US South one might be able to get it for free as it grows wild). Taste to me is similar to Yerba Mate.
Guayusa - Ilex guayusa. For example, Runa. Unfortunately, I have never seen anything other than pre-prepared drinks of this in stores and haven't as of yet bought the tea off of Amazon so I don't have as much to say on the subject.
Wikipedia states there is also Kuding which I have never seen, online reviews say it is extremely bitter.
Kola Nut - So everyone that doesn't avoid caffeine altogether has probably tried Coca-Cola, which is named for the Kola nut (and Cocaine), unlike coca leaves (sans the cocaine) Coca-Cola no longer uses Kola nuts, so one has to find specialty shops or order online to get a soda that actually has kola nut.
Guarana - There are options for this one, for some reason energy drink makers use this for energy drinks so I guess one can try it that way, better to find the soda from South America, I prefer Antarctica both because I like it and it seems the most widely available. Some people compare the soda to cream soda, I don't think that is a great comparison.
NON-CAFFEINATED:
Pero - Technically ground roasted barley but roasting and grinding one's own has never produced comparable results.
My favorite game when feeding new missionaries is to make this with milk and sugar and to not tell them what it is, as with milk and sugar it can be difficult to tell apart from coffee.
There is also Dandelion coffee, Chicory root, and so on. I have found the Teecino blends to be pretty good in this regards. I personally dislike Rooibos and most tea mixtures containing it.
Five flavor berry tea - If one is looking for something that replicates tea this isn't really it, it is however very good and unique on its own merits.
