POLICE have rushed to Oak Park Mall after shots were reportedly fired.

Shoppers have reportedly fled the scene in Overland Park, located about 20 minutes southwest of Kansas City, with some saying they received a text message alerting them to the situation.

Overland Park Police confirmed that no one was hurt and multiple suspects are in custody.

The shooting erupted after an officer tried to make contact with two shoplifting suspects in the shopping mall's food court, police said.

"One of the suspects reached for the officer's gun and fired a shot. Thankfully, it did not hit anyone and no one was hurt," the police statement continued.

One suspect was nabbed in the mall and the other shortly after that.

The mall remains on lockdown as police work to clear the scene and release shoppers.

The U.S. Sun has reached out to Overland Park police for more information.

Witnesses have taken to social media to share what they saw and heard.

"I was in the candy shop trying some of the candy when everyone just started running and screaming," one person shared on X, formerly Twitter.

Someone else reported being barricaded in a store.

"Police say they have the person and will be releasing us soon. Very scary situation," they wrote.

One person shared a screenshot to X of a text message alert received in the aftermath of the shooting.

"Red flag notification. Gunshot has been reported in the food court. Stay in lockdown," the message read in part.

Another woman shared a video to Facebook showing some of the police presence at the scene.

"Me and the boys made it out safe, we walked in and within 3 min in they was shooting. That was way too close, that s*** felt terrible," she wrote.

The Oak Park Mall shooting is the second in the area in recent days.

At Independence Center, located about 30 miles northeast of Oak Park Mall, four people were injured in a shooting that happened on Friday afternoon.

Three people were taken into custody in that shooting, which left at least one victim in critical condition, according to KMBC.
