According to the Hanover Police Department, the fire started in the HVAC system on the roof of JCPenney.

The fire spread from the rubber roof and metal deck, but is now under control. However, smoke was being contained in the center of the room, said emergency personnel.

Michelle Walls told the Evening Sun that there were at least 10 emergency vehicles from multiple stations, including Hanover, Spring Grove and Pleasant Hill.

“It definitely looks like they have it confined to just JCPenney’s,” she said.

The building was empty, according to the emergency dispatch. However, there was a major gas leak.

Video taken at the scene showed dark clouds of smoke billowing in the sky.

No injuries have been reported so far.
