ROBERT Card was found dead 48 hours after killing 18 in America's deadliest gun rampage of 2023.
The desperate manhunt came to an end on Friday night, with Card's body found in the Maine Recycling Corporation located at 61 Capital Ave in Lisbon, Maine Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck said during a press conference Saturday.
The owner of the Recycling Corporation told officials that there were more trailers to clear in an overflow parking lot in the same location, according to Sauscheck, where Card's body was finally found.
Card, 40, had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at the time of his body's discovery.
Card was on the run for more than two days after storming a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston, about an hour north of Portland.
Before being found, he was charged with eight counts of murder following the deadliest US mass shooting of 2023.
Meanwhile, Sauscheck added that Card left a note to a loved one with a phone passcode, bank account numbers, and other important information. The note was not explicitly a suicide note, the safety commissioner said.

Lisbon police used its resources
The hunt for the Lewiston shooting suspect involved the employment of a multitude of resources from several organizations and departments, according to Lisbon Police Chief Ryan McGee.
"As you can imagine, it was an astronomical amount of resources being used across our community," McGee said at a press conference today.
"Not everybody’s in marked police cars, not everybody’s in full uniform.
"But there was a lot of resources from across New England that was here, including helicopters moments after I arrived on scene when that car was located. So we used every resource that was available."

William was 48 years old.

Ron Morin, 55, was at Schemengees Bar and Grille when the shooting began.
His family is in "shock and profound grief," according to Cecile Francoeur Martin, a family member, who spoke to CNN.
Martin called Morin lively, positive, and joyful during an interview with the Bangor Daily News.

"He’s going to be very missed,” Putnam said to WCVB.
"It’s going to be very hard for the family right now to deal without him because he was kind of the center of the family and everything."
“He was always trying to make people laugh and always enjoyed life to the fullest,” Bill's brother Rob said in a GoFundMe.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better big brother.”
Rob characterized his high school sophomore nephew Aaron as a kind and kind young man who delighted in participating in all of his father's activities.

Both 14-year-old Aaron and his father Bill Young, who is referred to as the family's rock, were slain while bowling together.
When the gunman entered the premises, Young and his son were playing a game at Just-In-Time Recreation, according to Kayla Putnam, Bill's stepdaughter, and Aaron's sister, who spoke to WCVB.
According to Putnam, Aaron was an honor student in school and took great pride in his academics. He is deeply mourned by his friends.
Putnam said that Bill was the family's pillar of support and an auto technician.

The widow of deceased Bob Violette, Lucille Violette was also named by Department of Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck as a victim of the shooting spree.
She was 73 years old.

When the firing started, Bob Violette, 76, was instructing a young bowling league at Just-In-Time Recreation.
According to WBZ, Violette's family believes he died shielding his kids from gunfire.
“Bob’s helped with the youth league for as long as I can remember,” Violette’s friend Brandon Dubuc told the outlet.
“If he was there with those kids, he was protecting those kids. I have no doubt about that.”
Violette died days before his 77th birthday.

According to his sister Kelsay Hathaway, Maxx Hathaway was a full-time stay-at-home father of two with a third kid on the way.
“He was a goofy, down to earth person, loved to joke around and always had an uplifting attitude no matter what was going on,” Kelsay Hathaway said in a verified GoFundMe campaign.
“Brenda (his wife), the girls, his family and friends meant the world to him, and his loss will be felt among the communities that he was a part of and grew up in.”
Kelsay said that his wife is expecting a child in just over a month.
When the shooter attacked, 35-year-old Maxx was at Schemengees.

Commissioner of Public Safety Mike Sauschuck said that he has identified Keith Macneir as one of the victims of the shooting spree.
He was 64 years old.
What is known about the victims: Joshua Seal
According to his wife, beloved American Sign Language interpreter Joshua Seal was competing in the cornhole competition for deaf athletes in Schemengees on Wednesday when he was killed.
Seal, 36, was the director of interpreting services, according to a Facebook statement from Pine Tree Society, his company.
During the pandemic, Seal rose to prominence as one of the principal deaf translators for Maine Governor Janet Mills and medical professional Nirav Shah during the daily Covid-19 briefings.
Elizabeth Seal paid homage to her husband on Facebook, saying that he was a kind and supportive father who cherished spending time with his kids.
What is known about the victims: Joseph 'Joey' Walker
Leroy Walker, an Auburn, Maine city councilor that one of the dead at Schemengees was his son, Joseph Walker, 57, per CNN.
Walker said that state police informed his son's wife that the bar manager, Joseph, was shot to death after he grabbed a knife and pursued the gunman in an attempt to stop him from killing other people.
Walker claimed that he and his family received word of Joseph's passing after waiting for 14 hours.
“I’m very proud of my son,” Leroy Walker said to the outlet on Friday morning. “I know that definitely he would do this all over again.
“For someone to do this to so many families, as well as my own, it’s just crazy. It just leaves you an empty hole that I don’t know how it will ever be filled.”

According to Arthur Bernard, the father of 42-year-old Arthur "Artie" Strout, he was at Schemengees when the shooting occurred, per CBS News.
Bernard claimed that he got the devastating call that there was an active shooter shortly after leaving Schemengees.
Strout's family was informed of his passing on Thursday, although they had assumed he was in the hospital.

Bryan MacFarlane, 40, was murdered while playing cornhole at Schemengees, according to his sister Keri Brooks, who spoke with CNN.
According to Brooks, MacFarlane, who is a member of the local deaf community, typically visits Schemengees on Wednesdays when the deaf community congregates to play cornhole.

Commissioner of Public Safety Mike Sauschuck named Jason Walker as one of the victims of the shooting.
Walker was 51 years old.

Michael Deslauriers Sr. posted on Facebook that his son, 51-year-old Michael Deslauriers II, had been shot and murdered while trying to charge at the gunman at the bowling alley.
On the Sabattus Historical Society's Facebook page, Deslauriers Sr., the head of the group, said that both his son and a friend perished while attempting to stop the gunman.
“They made sure their wives and several young children were under cover then they charged the shooter,” Deslauriers Sr. said.
He added that this was "hardest news for a father to ever have to share."

Tommy Conrad, 34, was one of the people killed in the mass shooting in Lewiston.
Conrad’s daughter, age nine, is his only surviving child, his family revealed to WMTW.
Conrad was the bowling alley manager.

Peyton Brewer-Ross, 39, was slain at Schemengees Bar & Grille Restaurant while playing cornhole, according to his brother Ralph Brewer, who spoke with CNN.
Brewer-Ross enjoyed spending time with friends at Schemengees and playing cornhole.
Brewer-Ross “loved being a dad more than anything else,” his brother said.
Brewster-Ross celebrated his daughter Elle's second birthday two weeks ago.
What is known about the victims: Steve Vozzella, part three
Vozzella was a competitive cornhole player who also took part in a number of local competitions run by the New England Deaf Cornhole league, per CNN.
“With sadly and heavy hearts, NEDC has lost a member of our community, Steve Vozzella. He was one the victims lost in the shooting in Maine,” the organization wrote in a Facebook post Thursday.
According to the group's statement, the New England Deaf Cornhole league will observe a moment of quiet in Vozzella's memory during a future event in November.

The Governor Baxter School for the Deaf mentioned Vozzella's passing in a statement after the incident, adding that numerous members of their community also lost their lives as a result of the attack.
The school’s Executive Director Karen Hopkins, said in a Facebook post: "We lost four of our cherished community members in last night’s Lewiston shootings. Including two fathers of children in our programs."
"Some of our staff were very close to these members of our community."

In addition to being a happy and enthusiastic competitor, Stephen Vozzella was also involved in the New England Deaf Cornhole community.
His brother and The National Association of Letter Carriers, which represents U.S. Postal Service city delivery letter carriers, have both released statements about him.
"Brother Vozzella was only 45 years old," NALC President Brian L. Renfroe said in a statement.
"He had much more life to live before it was stolen from him in an all-too-common senseless act of gun violence."

According to her sister, Tricia Asselin, 53, was the center of their close-knit family and worked part-time at Just-in-Time Recreation, a bowling alley, per CNN.
Asselin was at Just-in-Time on Wednesday night, even though it was her night off, per her brother.
DJ Johnson told the outlet: "What I’m told is that when it all started happening, she ran up to the counter and started to call 911, and that’s when she was shot.
"That was just her. She wasn’t going to run. She was going to try and help."
Johnson said that his other sister was also present and managed to get away.
Rate of guns shot deaths in Maine
In Maine, the rate of gun fatalities rose by 41% between 2012 and 2021, whereas the national rate grew by 39% during the same period, per EveryStat.
Accordingly, there were 48 extra gun-related fatalities in 2021 compared to 2012.
Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action release statements, continued
“Another American community is grappling with what should be the unthinkable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety.
“The people of Lewiston and all who love them can count on the full support of the gun safety movement in the difficult days, months, and years to come.”
“Yet again, families and communities are devastated by a senseless act of gun violence. This is not an inevitability,” said Angela Ferrell-Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action.
“If access to guns made us safer, America would be the safest country in the world.
"Instead, we live in a place where you may get shot and killed by a weapon of war while simply living your life. We refuse to accept this as our reality.”
Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action release statements
In reaction to the mass shootings that occurred in Lewiston, Maine, Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action have shared remarks.
“Our hearts are broken for the community and the loved ones of those impacted in this senseless tragedy,” said Kathleen McFadden, a volunteer and co-chapter leader with the Maine chapter of Moms Demand Action.
“Bowling night, dinner with friends, supermarket trips, and school drop-offs should be safe places free from gun violence.
"We won’t sit idly by as this crisis tears our communities apart and will continue to demand action every single day until we are safe from gun violence once and for all.”
Maine’s gun laws are not strict, continued
Maine does not have any laws prohibiting the carrying of concealed weapons, nor does it need a permit.
Everytown for Gun Safety gave Maine a No. 25 ranking among all states for the strength of gun laws, which also said that "state leaders must do more to prevent gun violence."
Earlier this year, attempts to impose background checks on private gun transactions and institute a 72-hour waiting period before purchasing a firearm were unsuccessful, NBC reported.
In 2019, proposals pertaining to school safety and the outlawing of bump stocks were unsuccessful.
Additionally, certain proposals to strengthen Maine's gun regulations were rejected by the state's voters.
In a 2016 public vote, a proposal to mandate background checks for gun sales was defeated.
