Parveen Kaur Sahota (@parvsahota) was going bald before she discovered a method to help grow back her hair.

She shared a TikTok video of her using a derma roller on her scalp which went viral with over 4.3 million viewers in a month.

A high-quality Koi Beauty derma roller can be bought on Amazon for $9.97.

While demonstrating the trick, she explained in a subtitle that she derma rolls on a dry, clean scalp twice a week in different directions with light pressure.

After the head massage, she said she applies hair oil all over.

At the end of the video, she showed progress photos from January 10 and January 28 with obvious hair growth in areas where she was previously bald.

The practice caught the attention of Kimberley Medd, Clinic Lead at skincare company Face the Future.

"A derma roller is used for the skin to help with rejuvenation, reduce fine lines and smooth skin texture, reduce pigmentation, boost skin firmness, and to support minimization of acne scarring," she said.

She shed some light on the pros and cons of using the at-home beauty tool on your scalp.

Kimberley said that derma rollers can be used on your skin, scalp, and beard, as an alternative to in-clinic scalp microneedling.

It can help to stimulate sebum and collagen production, circulation, and cellular turnover to benefit your skincare and hair without causing any pain.

"Other pros are that it's affordable, easy to use, can help tackle hair loss and boost hair density," she added.

It could be a con if you're not cleaning your derma roller, which can lead to irritation and heightened skin sensitivity.

In addition, using it too aggressively "may cause discomfort and cause further stress to the skin."

Parveen derma rolled her scalp twice a week and Kimberley agreed that every two to three days is "sufficient time to help stimulate the hair follicles."

"More specifically, those with fine, thin hair will be able to see the benefits," she added.

"It's most effective for early stages of hair loss and less so for those experiencing late stages of hair loss or total baldness."

Kimberley also explained how skin and hair health are both linked.

"Keratinocytes are found in our hair, skin and nails, a type of protein which helps create a protective barrier, so the support needed for hair and skin is often the same," she said.

"Ingredients like antioxidants, peptides, hyaluronic acid, AHAs and Vitamin C can be found in both skin and hair health products."

If you don't maintain good hair health, it can severely impact your skin.

According to Kimberley, if you have a dirty scalp, you can transfer the debris and build up to the skin causing clogged pores and blemishes.
