TANKS of oxygen exploded in the back of a flatbed truck during a massive fire in Seattle on Thursday evening, fire officials said.

The Seattle Fire Department warned drivers to slow down near SB I-5 and between Lakeview and Merced St exits while crews responded to the blaze.

Seattle Fire announced the incident around 1pm, saying: "Crews identified a flatbed truck with liquid oxygen tanks that are on fire.

"Tanks are exploding. Please avoid the area."

All southbound lanes of the major interstate were closed as a bystander shared a video that showed the roaring blaze.

In the video, smoke is billowing while a fire overtakes a large truck on the highway.

Officials warned residents who live near SB 1-5 at Lakeview Blvd E to close windows and doors to avoid smoke exposure from the massive fire.

Hazmat crews were dispatched, the Seattle Fire department announced.

All lanes were back open by 7.30pm, according to local media.

No injuries were initially reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
