Spread the love Gary Malcolm Wright (born April 26, 1943) is an American singer, songwriter, and musician best known for his 1976 hit songs “Dream Weaver” and “Love Is Alive,” as well as his role in establishing the synthesiser as a major instrument in rock and pop music. After spending seven years in London as a member of the British heavy rock band Spooky Tooth and a solo artist on A&M Records, Wright released his breakthrough album, The Dream Weaver (1975). While in England, he performed keyboards on former Beatle George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass triple album (1970), beginning a relationship that would later influence Wright’s future work with Indian religious themes and spirituality. His work has incorporated world music and the new age genre since the late 1980s, but none of his post-1976 albums have equaled the success of The Dream Weaver.
Wright, a former child performer, had his Broadway debut in the popular musical Fanny before going on to study medicine and psychology in New York and Berlin. Wright went to London after meeting Chris Blackwell of Island Records in Europe, where he helped develop Spooky Tooth as a successful live act. He was also the band’s primary songwriter on their records, which included the critically acclaimed albums Spooky Two (1969) and You Broke My Heart So I Busted Your Jaw (1970). (1973). Footprint (1971), which featured contributions from Harrison, was released around the same time as the founding of Wright’s short-lived band Wonderwheel, which included guitarist Mick Jones. Wright also appeared on albums by B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr, and others in the early 1970s.
