The institute, which is an Aveda cosmetology school, allegedly forced students to clean, do laundry, restock products, and perform sales tasks during clinic hours even when they weren't clocked in.

Class members argued that they should have been compensated for the work and that the school violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by not paying them.

Ultimately, the Douglas J. Institute agreed to pay $2.8 million to resolve the suit, according to the settlement website.

Under the settlement terms, class members can receive a cash payment based on the number of qualifying hours they work.

Only students who attended a cosmetology program in Michigan and participated in the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and/or Salon Life courses between 2012 and 2022 are eligible to file a claim.

They must file by November 24 in order to qualify for a payment.

The cash reward will vary based on the number of hours worked.

Douglas J. Institute denied any wrongdoings.

Meanwhile, LensCrafters agreed to a settlement to resolve allegations that it violated certain laws by falsely advertising its AccuFit system.

The company claimed the system was designed to get each patient the best-fit eyeglasses for them using digital measuring.

According to the settlement, LensCrafters claimed its system was “five times more precise” than traditional methods, measuring “down to a tenth of a millimeter” despite never updating its manufacturing process to manufacture glasses to a 0.1mm specification.

Customers claimed that they paid more for their glasses but didn't see the benefits they were promised from the special system.

EssilorLuxottica, owner of LensCrafters, denies any accusations of wrongdoing but has agreed to the settlement to resolve the claims.

Claimants can receive up to $50 for each pair of prescription eyeglasses purchased that were fitted with AccuFit between September 5, 2013, to September 20, 2023.

Another settlement is offering one-time payments from a $17.75 million pot.
