She was an English novelist who was one of the most prolific and financially successful of the twentieth century. It is estimated that her 723 books have been translated into 36 different languages, and she is still included in the Guinness World Records as having released the most number of novels in a single year. Barbara Cartland is most known for her many romance novels, but she also wrote under the pen name Barbara McCorquodale, which she acquired after her marriage. She penned more than 700 novels, which were allegedly sold in excess of 750 million copies worldwide. Other estimates claim that she has sold more than 1 billion copies of her books. She specialised in pure romance novels set in the nineteenth-century Victorian period. All of her books were illustrated in a portrait manner. Aside from these accomplishments, Cartland was also one of London’s most famous social characters and one of Britain’s most well-known media personalities, a position she held until her death in 2000 at the age of 98.
