SMOKE was seen billowing from an Albertsons store this afternoon after a fire broke out on the building's roof.

A number of shocked witnesses shared reports of an "explosion" at the Cully store in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday.

The owner of a nearby business heard two explosions before the flames began, KOIN's Elizabeth Dinh tweeted.

Others described their shock as thick clouds of black smoke filed the air.

"The Albertsons across the street from our house just blew up," one Twitter user said.

Another shared a picture of smoke billowing through the air near the store.

The blaze began on the roof of the building around 5pm and was under control within 20minutes, Portland Fire & Rescue said in a series of tweets.

They added that the store was quickly evacuated after the blaze broke out.

The fire has since been completely extinguished, with Portland Fire & Rescue explaining how they managed to get it under control.

"Water being applied to the fire….smoke conditions changing," it wrote in one Tweet.

"Roof overhaul underway to ensure all fire extinguished," officials said a few minutes later.

Albertsons didn't immediately respond to The U.S. Sun's request for comment.
